12 of 19 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as previous seasons., December 4, 2011 Season 17 of Top Gear began airing in August 2011 on BBC America, almost 2 months after it had originally aired in the UK. For some reason this season seems a bit weak. The first episode starts off with a segment featuring Richard driving the "Marauder" in South Africa. Pretty cool but clips from this review appear in the 2010 USA East Coast Road Trip so the Maruader review should have been in Season 16.

Of the 6 episodes in Season 17, the only one I REALLY liked was the 2nd episode. In this episode, James, Jeremy and Richard travel to Italy to test out 3 small cars(Fiat 500C Abarth Essesse , Citroen DS3 Racing and the Renaultsport Clio 200 Cup). They start by trying to navigate out of a small town with narrow streets and then take part in a scavenger hunt. The trip ends with the trio racing on the Monaco Grand Prix Circuit.

Celebrity appearences in this series include Formula One Champion Sebastian Vettel, Rock legend Alice Cooper and Rowan Atkinson who is hilarious and a very gifted driver. The other 3 appearences are Bob Geldof, Ross Noble and Louis Walsh. The last episode features Ben Collins in a cool segment featuring military amputees competing in a rally event. Collins is referred to as "the former Stig" and is shown as a driving instructor to a team of retired military vets.

The issue is that at this point in the series it seems as if the presenters are trying too hard to be funny and entertaining rather than reviewing cars. For example, when James reviews the Aston Martin Virage, he goes on about Aston doing too much testing at the Nurburgring and the car being too fast. Too fast. This predictably leads to an argument between James and Jeremy and sets up a few punch lines later in the show. James rarely reviews sports cars because of this and it seems as if they let "Captain Slow" review the Virage just for its comedic value. While comedy has always been a big part of the show, scenes that take part in the studio feel very scripted in this series.

Season 17 of Top Gear was decent but compared to previous seasons such as 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16 it seems a bit flat. I give this season 3.5 out of 5 stars.
